Last week I had the opportunity to go to South by Southwest’s Interactive Conference in Austin, Texas. I stopped into Refinery29’s School of Self-Expression – a pop-up shop designed in collaboration with Nieman Marcus as an interactive experience for women that combined elements of technology, style and creativity. I felt like I had stepped into a high-school fantasy world, where lockers lined the walls, creatively expressing different styles, personalities and people. The teenager in me was particularly drawn to a mint-green locker lined with a thick, light-pink rabbit fur inside. A trophy case lined another wall and words overhead stated “Those names you were called in school made you who you are today. Reclaim the insults and claim your trophy.” Typical trophies, awards and ribbons had been re-imagined to celebrate the ‘doodlers’, ‘daydreamers’ and ‘geeks’ of our world. High school aside, I think we could all stand to re-evaluate some of the negativities in our lives, whether it be hindering comments from others or even yourself, in order to happily appreciate what makes each of us unique.
